Cabin fever 2002 streaming1/17/2024 ![]() ![]() Heralding in the “torture porn” genre, Eli Roth is a visionary in his own right - even if his medium is blood and carnage. The Evil Dead is available to rent on multiple platforms including Prime Video. If you prefer a more polished approach to this classic horror story, go for the actually pretty great 2013 remake, which features modern production and a freshly disgusting take on gore. It also doesn’t hurt that Raimi’s brother Ted is an actor in both Dead and Quarry. You just can’t get away from the campy, gory choices by Sam Raimi and how they influenced some of the kills and setting in The Quarry. But perhaps more relevant is just how influential The Evil Dead is to horror as a genre. First, the obvious: A group of teens heads to a remote cabin and supernatural forces make them their prey. Sam Raimi’s quintessential campy gore fest The Evil Dead is a great tonal follow-up for a few reasons. Sleepaway Camp is available to rent on multiple platforms including Apple TV, and it’s streaming on Peacock. Players of The Quarry will love this feeling of “did he say the right thing or not?” dread. The main protagonist is a young girl with a traumatic past who doesn’t even speak for nearly a third of the film and harbors shocking secrets - making this movie distressing from an interpersonal standpoint. What’s perhaps more potent in comparison is that Sleepaway Camp relies almost entirely on the interactions between campers to build suspense and dread. The setting and subject matter are obvious stand-ins here: The film sees a group of disparate campers, counselors, and staff being hunted by a first-person assailant in a brutal-but-campy film that’s amassed a sizable cult following in recent years. Who knows? Could turn out to be a future game of chance on my roulette wheel. The obvious corollary for The Quarry is the oddball 1983 mystery-slasher film Sleepaway Camp. I may view that one as well at some point. I’m not so sure that I even care at this point. If things in the franchise couldn’t get any worse, they went ahead and remade the original Cabin Fever, which was released in theaters in 2016. This movie is definitely worth a watch, if solely only for the gore. I was left wondering why would someone go to such lengths to infect the world for no financial gain. Even the well done ending felt off and out of place. Because I myself, never even begged the question. The entire time, I was asking myself, ‘ what’s the point of this’? I guess I wasn’t aware that anyone cared how his sick disease started. These few factors do very little if anything at all though, to salvage this pile of fucking rubbish. This fight scene helped keep the film from being a complete waste of fucking time. The female fight on the beach was complete gory eye candy, if that description is even possible. The practical effects, were as you would expect from a Cabin Fever installment. But the acting really wasn’t too bad though. The film stars Sean Astin and a group of “never heard of’s”. How will the bachelors fare on this ill-fated voyage? Sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Apparently, this same desolate island harbors the now infamous water-borne skin crawling disease. The groom to be and his buds trek out on a make shift bachelor party on some off shore uninhabited island. The film follows a young wedding party, prepping for the big day on a resort locale. So, that brings us to Patient Zero, a prequel. Even though the movie is mostly forgettable, albeit the soundtrack and the fact that Ti West directed helped quite a bit. I also found some enjoyment in Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009). I may be in the minority on this, but I actually rather enjoyed Eli Roth’s original Cabin Fever (2002). What does the roulette wheel hold for me this week? A couple of weeks ago, I gambled and won with Late Phases (2014). After going over that list, I am honestly surprised at my luck. To date, I am at 12 winners to only 3 stinkers. After looking through my list of Bloody Streaming Roulette films previously gambled upon, I have had a pretty good gambling experience. Welcome back boils and ghouls! As we are all hopefully finally getting settled in with 2017, it’s time to dust off my balls. ![]()
